20 / 21 – Exploring the 20th & 21st Century development of the Flute and its repertoire

Part II

Following on from the Era of the Golden Age of Flute playing / French flute school, our repertoire underwent a massive expansion.

Evolving from the impressionistic styles of the early 1900’s, shifting towards the varied works of the modern day; composers explored atonality (Messiaen, Boulez, Varèse), virtuosity (Liebermann, Rodrigo, Hindemith, Martinu), Jazz (Bolling), Avant- garde techniques (Ian Clarke) and of course the rise of the female composers coming into their own (Coleman, Hull, Hoover and more).

Such an exciting era for us flutists.  Along with the expansion of our repertoire, of course came the modernization of the flute itself, which we shall also discuss.

Please join Lady Jeanne along with Sir James alongside our Guest Artist for the 21st May Session - Carol Lynn Ward Bamford (Curator of Musical Instruments Collection in the Music Division of the US Library of Congress), as we discuss flutes, 21st Century repertoire and the continued foundations of good solid playing to help you reach those high notes & the techniques you would like to incorporate into your playing.
