Let's March..

As a young flutist, Summer was marching time for me.  Growing up in marching bands through my early years, we were introduced to playing piccolo as well as marches on flute.  Composers like John Phillip Sousa kept us on our toes.

Marching has many benefits, first and foremost developing a good sense of rhythm and tackling technical challenges while playing and marching….and keeping our flutes steady as we move!

In this session I invite you to find a March, perhaps one you grew with from your home country or one that catches your ear every time you hear it?   We also invite you also to play piccolo if you like!

Watch how your rhythm and understanding of 2/4 & 6/8 becomes stronger within your playing simply by marching and concentrating on a steady rhythm, along with having a familiar tune to hum along to.

Studies:

Taffanel & Gaubert EJ4 - practicing Scales in different rhythms.
Etudes: Moyse 24 melodic studies: #7 with variations

Repertoire:

Your favourite March

Midsummer reflections Including Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Nights Dream

As we enter into mid summer and celebrate and enjoy warm easy days of living shall we also play some nice tunes reflecting this time of the year?

In this session I invite you to choose a tune to play for us that reflects your mid summer mood.

Many composers have written tunes or standard repertoire to reflect this season.

Practice time:

And as the summer offers us longer days we have more time to also work on all those wonderful techniques that will afford you to be able to play that legato phrase its a little longer and more beautiful or core up those tricky finger passages.

Our tone exercises, scales and etudes will always keep us in shape and ready for playing the pieces we love or want to add to our repertoire.

Exercises:

Galway tone exercises in 4th’s (available to download)

Scales - single and double tongued. (T & G- EJ 4)

Moyse - De La Sonorité pg .10 - Legato triplets

Moyse - 24 Etudes- #8 with variations

This session will include Q&A

This session will be recorded and available to view until 30 September 2025
