Legato ala Moyse, Mozart & Gaubert
Sonorité, legato. smooth beautiful lines carrying a very simple tune…..
In this months' Adult Learners Sessions and throughout the summer we shall be working each week using Moyse’s famous book 24 Petites Etudes Mélodiques or in English: 24 Little Melodic Studies.
Each one of these studies may look very simple (hence the name), but as with any etude or musical tune it requires us to use all our resources to play a beautiful simple line.
What are our resources, what are we striving for?
- a beautiful tone connecting one note to another - Sonorité
- a smooth touch on the keyboard
- a light touch with your tongue (never hearing the tongue above the tone) as you begin the phrase or play on the variations on the tune
- and of course always being mindful of the breathing. Breathing from our core, allowing the air to follow up an out with your beautiful focused embouchure.
A flutists dream yes. Your goal, yes.
Our Goal together using the resources and techniques we have learned throughout the last few months.
29 May 2025 – 7.00pm (CET)
Moving along: Tonguing, touch & tone
Time to move along a bit. Now that we understand the placement and movement of your embouchure we are ready to go!
Let’s now add our tongue to get some nice clear playing.
Continuing on with Moyse’s book: 24 Petites Etudes Mélodiques lets have look at Studies #3 & #5
In studies 3 & 5 we now have the opportunity to work on placement of our embouchure in various registers (particularly the low register), with repeated stroke of the tongue without losing our clarity or fullness of our sound.
We prepare for these exercises - how?
Waking up our system!
- our morning Tone exercises
- our Taffanel & Gaubert scales - EJ4 - Choose one or two scales please which are comfortable for you to play please!
- Moyse – Sonorité - page 15 #1 - keeping the tongue light and with an open sound. After you have finished playing this exercise once, now try again playing each note two times, then three times then five times. Notice the movement of your tongue and how your tone improves with repetition
These sessions will be recorded and available to view until 22 July 2025.
