Putting it all together and our high notes…
December review time. Let's review together all the wonderful techniques we have discussed and worked on over the past few months; tone, tonguing, low notes and trills….before we move onto January let's add: High notes…
How do we get a beautiful open, easy sound in our upper register? The flute can soar so beautifully above all other instruments with the purest of sounds…
Ah…. but for us, being in control, playing with ease without closing our throats or squeezing can sometimes be an issue.
In this session we shall review what we have learned these past few months and also work on our high register. Our scales .. those beautiful scales that take us through the entire range of the flute….. those scales that are essential to identify and know inside and out that give us the freedom to create … the music that transcends the notes…
* Moyse Sonoritè.. our whole tone exercises - Page 9, Exercise 2
* Taffanel and Gaubert 17 Daily exercises - Ej #4
* Etudes.. #Boehm Twelve Grand Studies Op. 15, No. 5 (with and without trills) how they help us to build our muscles needs for good flexibility..
* Repertoire:: Saint Saens : the Swan - bringing the second verse up one octave, and of course your choice of repertoire - preferred choosing a piece with high register notes!
Knowing where our next notes are….
So much to learn and experience..
Don't worry if you are joining us of the first time… we shall have a great review of techniques for you!
Thursday, 19 December
Let’s play together!!!!!
Your goals for the New Year….Playing music with others…?? Joining a flute band, finding a duo partner? Taking your flute playing to the next level.
Now that we have worked on the techniques needed to build a good solid foundation in your flute playing, it’s time to branch out.. Let’s talk music..
I have always enjoyed playing duos with other flutists; whether it be my high school friend or later, my husband. This experience of playing with someone else brings such a wonderful sense of fulfillment. Two flutes together playing two simple lines of music in complete harmony. How special!
I would like to explore with you how we work on sight-reading and finding beautiful duets to learn and play with a partner. The composers understand the harmony and harmonic structure of two simple lines. When we play with another instrument our ears open up, we start hearing the contrapuntal lines of music….
We develop our ears, our brains and fingers…
I recommend:
- The Voxman book of duos : Book 1 & 2 (available to download)
- Telemann canonic Sonata in G Major (available to download)
Duos are not the only way to enjoy playing with others, but lets make a start .. simple melodies enhanced by a second instrument..
This is how we build our confidence and really begin to enjoy all the daily work you have put in over the last few months!
We shall end our session with a nice Q & A and also hearing some of your holiday favourites !
These sessions will be recorded and available to view until 31st March 2025.
